Keose Glebe Planning and Photo Night

23 members of the Keose Glebe Community met in Balallan hall on Saturday 1st April.

They were there to review the estate’s progress made in the first year of Community Ownership; to again discuss the strategic plan and direction of the estate; and to suggest projects or issues to be tackled or prioritised in year two.

Both the Estate Management Team, and the wider community were praised and thanked for their hard work and the volunteer hours put in.

The meeting noted that around 1700 hours of community effort had been invested thus far, and that a large number of projects and initiatives had been got underway.

The fact that the estate was now generating income, and enough income to meet its expenses was welcomed, and it was expected that further income would begin to drive additional development of the estate. Continue reading “Keose Glebe Planning and Photo Night”

Studying the Buyout — The Girl with a Van

Keose Glebe Estate have agreed to work with Dr Louise Senior of Manchester University as part of her year long study into the role of young people in music and community land management trusts.

This University of Manchester research project is called ‘Understanding Everyday Participation’

(see www.everydayparticipation.org )

This research will take Louise across the Western Isles, talking to all sorts of people and groups, but she will also follow the progress of the estate here over this year, and record the development and impact of the land buyout and our collective participation .

Luckily for us, she is staying just over the ‘border’ in Keose so she will be able to keep an independent and close eye on us.

She will be attending our anniversary event, so please say hello!

Happy 1st Birthday!

A year ago today, we completed the legal process to acquire the estate, and it officially became community owned.

That was quite an achievement, but that was only the beginning.

Much work and effort has be expended since then, and as we have now completed our first year, we hope to celebrate our achievements, reflect on a busy 12 months, and to plan for the year ahead, when the Keose Glebe Community meet up in Balallan on the 1st of April.

We would like however to again thank:

The Scottish Land Fund;
Highlands & Islands Enterprise;
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar;
Community Land Scotland;
Muaitheabhal Community Windfarm Trust;
Kinloch Community Council; and
Marine Harvest

For their help in starting us off and getting us here, for helping us bring positive change to the village, and for helping us build and strengthen our community togetherness.

1st Year Review

Its all come round very quickly(!) but to commemorate our first birthday as a community owned estate, we are planning on holding an event in Balallan Hall on Saturday 1st April at 7:30pm.

There will be a short presentation, reviewing the achievements of the first year; some fun brainstorming and planning for the year ahead; a discussion on our Renewable Energy and Community Building development plans; and just an opportunity for people and neighbours to chat and catch up on the news.

Following the success of the photo display at our launch day, another batch, showing Keose Glebe and its residents from 1960 to 1990 will be on show (any interesting pictures from this period will be much appreciated)

Tea, Coffee & Refreshments will be served, and it will would great if as many Keose Glebe people could attend.

[Please let us know if you need any transportation or other assistance to get there]

Free Food Hygiene Training

Food Hygiene has been identified as an important local training need in relation to running community events which feature food, as well as people who wish to get involved with tourism related services/accommodation.

As part of our ongoing training program therefore, a full intermediate food hygiene course will be run on Monday and Tuesday evening in the Estate Office —from 6.30pm to 9.30pm (13th & 14th March).

This certified training will be carried out by Yvonne Richardson and is open to all Keose and Keose Glebe residents.

The costs of the course are £320 for the 2 evenings plus £17 for each person attending, but the full cost of this will be met by the estate in order to encourage as many participants as possible.

Please phone 830239, or email keoseglebe@hotmail.co.uk if you would like to take part

Spring Tree-Planting Event 2017

We hope to hold a tree planting session in the village on Saturday 17th March, and, as there are over 400 (Woodland Trust donated) trees to get into the ground, the help of as many people in the community as possible would be much appreciated!

We are keen to develop shelter belts here and there to provide shelter and habitat locally, and to help with drainage and the look of the place.

The gathering point will be at the Fank at 10am, so we hope to see you there!

We expect to have a small digger to assist with the heavy lifting, but spades would be appreciated, and there is a task for everyone…from turning over the earth, to planting the tree, to ensuring that the soil is firmly pressed down, that the tree is watered , and that it is fitted with a protective plastic sleeve, cane and tie.

3 people planted 105 trees in 2 and a half hours in November, so a few more volunteers will help ensure that this larger number of plants can be secured snuggly in their new homes in a similar amount of time.

New Keose Glebe Director

A full compliment of Keose Glebe directors has been restored with the appointment of Ann Moqbel to the Board.

We very much welcome Ann’s knowledge, experience, and administrative expertise to help keep us right as we work away on the many aspects of estate development and running a business.

As a very small village, and as we do not have the benefit of paid staff here, all voluntary effort is very much appreciated. If you have any free time, or skills to put to the benefit of the community, or if you want to discuss any idea, or just want to discuss and find about what is happening, just come and visit us at the Portacabin — Tuesdays @ 7pm
