New Keose Glebe Drains in Full Flow

Following the initial clean-up and scrub clearance by village volunteers, and then the cleaning of the drains by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, it is now great to see the drains full of winter snow and rain!

Hopefully, now that this water has somewhere to go, we will have  much drier crofts and parks, and there will be less water getting on to the roads themselves.

There are lots more drains to fix and bring back into use, and hopefully some more of these will be tackled in the year ahead.

Thank you again to the volunteers involved, and to CnES for their work.

Estate Managment – Preparing for Winter

Estate Volunteers have been busy going over the Glebe, checking buildings, equipment, trees and boats so that they are made safe and ready for whatever the weather and forthcoming season throws at them.

These are all parts of the activities and responsibilities that come with community land ownership, and just some of skills that we are developing as a community.

Thank you to all the participants who have assisted with this, and especially to Finlay Morrison who tied down our storage container and picnic bench.

Keose Glebe Tree Planting Advances!

The community have been granted a further 420 trees from the Woodland Trust, and on a cold and damp Saturday in November, a bunch of hardy volunteers set out to plant them!!

This involved a whole range of tasks to be undertaken, from the building of the protective fencing, the trenching, the planting, and the tying of canes and plastic coils. [But] with a dedicated team, and each person with their own task, it becomes a process that works well and smoothly, and the trees get planted in best production line order. Community Day Review

This was very much a step into the unknown for the Keose Glebe Community in many ways. In terms of organising and running an event of this nature, of knowing how well the venue chosen would work, whether the weather would hold together, and lots of other if, buts and maybe’s.

On the day however, things worked out brilliantly.

Ok, the marquee we had organised did not appear, the midges were intense both before and after the event, and a number of other challenges reared their heads. However, everyone kept cool, and worked away, diligently and without argument, so when it came to opening time, all was done, all was prepared, the midges had given up, and the sun had come out to shine!! At the Lochs Show 2017

A very enjoyable day in the sun was had by everyone who attended the Lochs Show on Saturday.

[Lochs Gaelic Choir members with TV and radio star Sanjeev Kohli at the Tea Shed.]

While the Estate were not formally involved in the show and its events, we did have an advertising presence there (at the Tea Shed) and Keose Glebe residents were there both helping out and enjoying the day.

Keose Glebe Noticeboard

The work on the village noticeboard has taken a step forward with the arrival of the centrepiece signage, and the creation of a flowerbed around its base.

This signage has two purposes – one as a village map and locator; and secondly as a space to advertise local businesses, services and funding providers.

Additional information panels and services will be installed soon.

Thanks to Stuart at Graphite Signs for the excellent signage; to Angus Macdonald for the stonework; and to Donna Graysmith for the plants and planting.

Keose Glebe Pop-Up Garden

Work on the community garden beside the Meeting House has begun.

The grass is being cut, trees and bushes are being planted, and we hope to eventually have a path and seating area for people to come and view the harbour and village.

Keose Glebe Volunteers in Action

A big thank you to all that took part, and that put in a full days shift on a warm, sunny day.

It was all very enjoyable and everyone worked very well together,  making things  a pleasure rather than a chore.

All that hard work ensured that a number of important jobs were carried out before the late afternoon downpour. These included:

  • The cutting up and transportation of fencing strainers;
  • Fencing around our 1st tree planting area, and the building of an access style;
  • Tree husbandry (ensuring that all the trees were watered, growing happily, properly staked and protected);
  • Two coats of Preservative Treatment being applied to the two Picnic Benches;
  • The building of a temporary ramp up to the Storage Container;
  • Some Grass cutting of the village verges; and the
  • Walking of the proposed Keose Glebe/Keose boundary wall walk.

In addition the day gave an opportunity to test the new estate vehicle in practical operation. All present were very happy with how it performed.

A big thank you too to Ann Carmichael for her fantastic lunch provision and hospitality, to Donna for her drinks and snacks, to Louise for sticking with us, and to Douglas for giving up his time on a Saturday for a very wet walk in the rain.

A warm feeling inside

FES FM provide an emergency and routine repair and maintenance service for Hebridean Housing – both across the Western Isles, and here in Keose Glebe.

We are therefore delighted, and would like to give a very big thank you to FES for the donation of a storage heater for the Estate Office.

A warm office will definitely help our meetings and the general estate operation, particularly over the long winter months.
