New Keose Glebe Drains in Full Flow

Following the initial clean-up and scrub clearance by village volunteers, and then the cleaning of the drains by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, it is now great to see the drains full of winter snow and rain!

Hopefully, now that this water has somewhere to go, we will have  much drier crofts and parks, and there will be less water getting on to the roads themselves.

There are lots more drains to fix and bring back into use, and hopefully some more of these will be tackled in the year ahead.

Thank you again to the volunteers involved, and to CnES for their work.

Estate Managment – Preparing for Winter

Estate Volunteers have been busy going over the Glebe, checking buildings, equipment, trees and boats so that they are made safe and ready for whatever the weather and forthcoming season throws at them.

These are all parts of the activities and responsibilities that come with community land ownership, and just some of skills that we are developing as a community.

Thank you to all the participants who have assisted with this, and especially to Finlay Morrison who tied down our storage container and picnic bench.

Keose Glebe Tree Planting Advances!

The community have been granted a further 420 trees from the Woodland Trust, and on a cold and damp Saturday in November, a bunch of hardy volunteers set out to plant them!!

This involved a whole range of tasks to be undertaken, from the building of the protective fencing, the trenching, the planting, and the tying of canes and plastic coils. [But] with a dedicated team, and each person with their own task, it becomes a process that works well and smoothly, and the trees get planted in best production line order. New Estate Cattle Grid

With financial assistance from Marine Harvest, and in conjunction with Keose Glebe Grazings, the moor road has been further upgraded with the installation of a new cattle grid. (The work being undertaken by AMK).

The old grid was getting to the end of its useful life, and the side walls had begun to fall, or were extremely wobbly. It is great therefore to see the new unit in place, compete with its hedgehog ladder and escape hope.

Thank you to all involved, and to Marine Harvest in particular. Continue reading “New Estate Cattle Grid”

Moor Road Speed Signs

As previously stated, a 10 mile per hour speed restriction and a 3.5 ton weight limit have been applied to the Keose Glebe moor road.

We have now obtained the appropriate signage and this has been installed (thank you to Graphite Signs and Angus Macdonald for this).

We would be grateful if these limits can be observed at all times.

There be diggers!!

Work has now begun on the ground and drainage improvements at the Keose Community Playpark. This is preparatory work to improve the general playing area and to support the future siting of play equipment for which fundraising efforts are ongoing.

Any donations to this project are most welcome, and should be directed to Mrs Jan Gold at 8 Keose or Freddie Macleod at 6 Keose.

Keose Glebe Volunteers in Action

A big thank you to all that took part, and that put in a full days shift on a warm, sunny day.

It was all very enjoyable and everyone worked very well together,  making things  a pleasure rather than a chore.

All that hard work ensured that a number of important jobs were carried out before the late afternoon downpour. These included:

  • The cutting up and transportation of fencing strainers;
  • Fencing around our 1st tree planting area, and the building of an access style;
  • Tree husbandry (ensuring that all the trees were watered, growing happily, properly staked and protected);
  • Two coats of Preservative Treatment being applied to the two Picnic Benches;
  • The building of a temporary ramp up to the Storage Container;
  • Some Grass cutting of the village verges; and the
  • Walking of the proposed Keose Glebe/Keose boundary wall walk.

In addition the day gave an opportunity to test the new estate vehicle in practical operation. All present were very happy with how it performed.

A big thank you too to Ann Carmichael for her fantastic lunch provision and hospitality, to Donna for her drinks and snacks, to Louise for sticking with us, and to Douglas for giving up his time on a Saturday for a very wet walk in the rain.
