Putting Down Roots

Keose Glebe recently applied for, and were delighted to be awarded a tree pack by the Woodland Trust, to help mark the Community Buyout of the Estate.

105 ‘Wild Wood’ saplings were received and these were planted by Loch Keose on the  12th of November.

Despite the cold and wet weather that day , three hardy souls braved the elements, and found some moments of sunshine, as they dug, mounded, drained, planted and protected the young trees.

The trees are a mixture of Rowan, Hazel, Hawthorn, Holly and Birch—all varieties bred to better withstand the exposure, climate and soils of the islands here.

To mark the buyout, each tree will be tagged and numbered, and each linked to a member of the Estate.

Thank you to Calum Dan Carmichael, Angus Macdonald, Angus Smith and Finlay Macdonald for their contribution and hard work.

We  hope to apply for more trees in the spring, and to create small shelter belts and attractive copses in appropriate places on the estate, and hopefully too, we will get better planting weather next time, so that more of the community can join in the effort.

Village Bonfire Night

Following on from the successful village bonfire last year, it has been decided to hold a similar event this year too.

Keose & Glebe Community Association and the Keose Glebe Steering Group have come together to build a bonfire, and to arrange food, drink and fireworks.

Now all friends and residents of Keose and Keose Glebe are warmly invited and encouraged to come along.

The bonfire is situated beside the Keose Glebe Estate Office, and will be lit
at 7pm on Friday 4th November.

Hopefully we will have a calm and dry night.

To help cover costs, we are looking to make a small charge of £1 per person, but any other donations and baking will be most welcome.

We will make every effort to cater for people needs. If you need some specific assistance, then please get in touch/let us know on the day.

Village Notice Board

Thank you to Donald A Macaulay has kindly allowed the community to use the gable wall of the for former byre at 5 Keose Glebe.

We hope to use this as an information and notice board, and its location makes it ideal to be seen by passing pedestrians and traffic.

Calum Dan Carmichael has been busy, preparing and painting the wall, so thank you also to him for a job well done.

The Office Estate Membership Cards are here!

While practically the whole village has now signed up for the first years membership of our community estate (well done and thank you!), we would now like to encourage as many other people as possible, perhaps family members, cousins, friends or anyone with a connection or interest in this place, to become associate members.

This will keep them informed, through newsletters and access to online information, to what is happening on the estate, what projects and developments are being considered, and it will allow them to comment and get involved in the matters that you, as resident members, will ulti-mately consider and decide upon.

It is hoped in future too, that other benefits of member-ship will also be developed (ideas gratefully received!).

It will also allow the community here to hopefully be supported and encouraged by the knowledge and expertise that the Keose Glebe diaspora undoubtedly possess.

The cost of this membership is currently only £1 annually, and so we would welcome your help in getting as many people signed up as we can. Perhaps even 100??

Village Defibrillator now up and running

With grateful thanks to Councillor Angus Morrison, Lucky2BHere, Keose and Glebe Community Association, and to Angus Macdonald for his electrical services, the villages of Keose and Keose Glebe now have a functioning Defibrillator.

It has been installed on the wall of the Keose Meeting House, and it flashes periodically to show that it is working correctly.

We hope to arrange further training for this machine, so that as many people as possible are familiar with its use should it ever be needed.

Crown Estate Visit

Rob Adam from the Crown Estate will be in the village on the 8th of September for a walkaround and to discuss issues relating to the local seabed and foreshore.

We will meet at the Weighbridge at 4.30pm.

This is especially relevant following the estate buyout and the community acquisition of the foreshore around Keose Glebe.

You are all welcome to come along and meet Rob, to ask questions, and to discuss any matters relating to how we develop this important asset.

Moorings

Since the Keose Glebe Community acquired ownership of the foreshore around the estate, including the majority of the bay at Port na Caraigh (up to the Carrington’s Garages), there have been a number of requests or expressions of interest from people looking to obtain a mooring for their boats here.

The existing moorings around Tavay are in limited supply, but the tidal nature of the bay, together with general access and other difficulties, makes short term or ‘easy’ expansion problematic.

Moorings in deeper waters are still governed by the Crown Estate (who we hope to meet this month)

We are, however, keen to see what expertise and advice can be brought to the matter, and what funding can be obtained to improve matters and access for all would-be users (without any detriment to the current mooring holders). Initially therefore, we would like to (informally at this stage):

Draw up a register of the current moorings, their locations and holders;

  • Assess the demand for additional moorings and facilities – initially from the inhabitants of the villages of Keose and Keose Glebe, but from further afield also;
  • To get some initial thoughts and comments from any interested party – both on what could and needs to be done around the bay and harbour, and any negative issues that affect use and enjoyment at the present time.

Please contact us with your information, views and expressions of interest.
